SRINAGAR: Chairman Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was put under house arrest on Sunday, as ULB polls in State begin today.
Mirwaiz on Sunday took to his Twitter handle to slam the curbs imposed by authorities to conduct the polls.
“Under #House Arrest!Peculiar”Democratic”process of elections“gearing up “as huge deployment of forces, PSAs, incarcerations,house arrests,raids Curbs,internet bans gather momentum! Not to mention the unknown contestants and amused public ! What mockery of democracy is at display!,” he wrote on his Twitter handle.
A spokesperson of the amalgam in a statement denounced the house arrest of Mirwaiz and termed it “highly undemocratic” and “totally unjustified”.
“A heavy contingent of government forces during wee hours, arrived at Mirwaiz’s residence and placed him under house arrest,” the spokesperson said. “The policy of force being used against people to keep them away from the religious practices and gatherings exposes their (authorities’) repression further.”
Chairman Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Muhammad Yasin Malik was arrested on Tuesday to prevent him from carrying out election boycott campaign. Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Geelani continues to be under house arrest since long.
Geelani, Mirwaiz and Malik who comprise the joint resistance leadership (JRL) have called for election boycott.
