SRINAGAR: Mian Abdul Qayoom was re-elected president, unopposed, of the J&K High Court Bar Association (HCBA) Srinagar on Thursday. It is the 20th time that Mian Qayoom will serve as president of the HCBA.
Elected for the first time in 1986 as HCBA president, Advocate Qayoom has been re-elected every time since then except during periods when he was in jail or when he did not contest elections.
The results were declared at Sadder Court Complex at Moominabad Srinagar by the Bar association’s Election Commission Chairman AR Kang.
In 2017, Advocate Qayoom won over Advocate Nazir Ahmed Ronga by a margin of 222 votes. Qayoom got 464 out of total 722 votes while Ronga bagged 242 votes. 16 votes were declared rejected.
Polling for this year’s election was held for four posts. For the position of vice president, Advocate Aijaz Ahmad Bedar won over his rival Mushtaq Ahmad Dar by a margin of 268 votes. Bedar secured 539 votes while Bhat got 271 votes. 13 votes were declared rejected.
For the post of General Secretary, Advocate Muhammad Ashraf Bhat defeated GN Shaheen by a margin of 116 votes. Bhat bagged 464 votes while Shaheen secured 348. Fifteen votes were declared rejected.
For the post of Joint Secretary, Adil Asmi defeated his rival candidates Ajaz Ahmad Dar and Bilal Ahmad Bhat. Asmi defeated his closest rival, Bilal, by 78 votes. Asmi bagged 366 votes, Bilal 288, and Ajaz 162. 15 votes were declared rejected.
For the post of Treasurer, Bilal Ahmad Wani scored 348 votes defeating his rivals Sameer Wani and Surat Shakeel Batkoo. Sameer bagged 254 votes while Batkoo got 218 votes. Seven votes were rejected.
