Srinagar: The callousness of Education department officials may result in lapsing of funds for the Government of India sponsored pre-matric scholarhisp for children of sweepers.
The scholarship is implemented by social Welfare Department throughout the state, but officials said that Zonal Education Officers (ZEOs) in Srinagar district have not provided the department with the list of eligible students.
Eligible students of Classes 1 – 10 would get 225 rupees per month for ten months of an academic year.
“This year government again wants the list of those children those parents are engaged in ‘unclean occupations’ so that they will provide scholarship to the students and accordingly we gave direction to the concerned ZEO but they don’t pay any heed towards our direction,” an official in the Social Welfare Department said.
“We send reminders but still they don’t provide the list.”
The ZEOs are supposed to collect the list of eligible students enrolled in government as well as private schools in their jurisdiction and provide it to the Social Welfare Department.
Some families eligible under the scheme, Kashmir Reader talked to, lamented the callousness of the officials.
They said that they are already living under hardship with negligible incomes, and the scholarship to their children would have boosted their morale.
“What was wrong in providing the deserving scholarship to our wards so that they would have gone further with their studies and overall activities,” a parent remarked.
