Kupwara: The army claimed to have killed three more militants on the second day of its operation along the Line of Control (LoC) in Tangdar sector of Kupwara on Monday. An army soldier also lost his life during the gunfight with militants, Srinagar-based army spokesperson Colonel Rajash Kalia said.
Official sources said that after the gunfight on Sunday in which two militants were killed in the dense woods some two kilometres from the army’s Eagle Post along the LoC in Tangdar sector, the army’s reinforcement teams found three more militants in the woods on Monday morning. A gunfight broke out and three more militants were killed, along with an army soldier.
The operation had started in the area on Saturday after army’s 20 Jat regiment posted along the LoC near Eagle Post detected suspicious movement of a group of militants who had crossed the LoC in the night and were on their way to civilian areas. When the army challenge the militants, a brief gunfight ensued before the militants vanished into the woods. From that day, intermittent exchange of gunfire was continuing in the area.
The army had sent reinforcements including para-troopers to hunt down the militants. This was the first encounter this month along the LoC in Tangdar sector.
