Anantnag: A Jaish-e-Muhammad militant of Pakistani origin was killed on Sunday during a gunfight with government forces here in Aripal village of Tral in Pulwama district.
The slain militant has been identified as Adnan Bhai and the injured civilian as 25-year-old Manzoor Ahmad Dar, a resident of Gaang village in Tral.
According to police a civilian was also injured, critically during the crossfire in nearby Wagad village.
“He has been shot in the mouth. His jaw has been blown off by the bullet that hit him,” a health official said.
As per police reports, a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched in Aripal village of Tral at about 7:00 AM, about 10 kilometres from the main town.
“While the searches were being conducted in the area, the militant fired at our men from a residential house in the area,” a senior police official told Kashmir Reader.
He said that the fire was retaliated, triggering a gunfight. The gunfight continued from 8:00 AM till about 1:00 PM, he said.
“The body of the militant has been retrieved and his weapon has also been retrieved,” the official said, adding that the militant was of Pakistani origin and was named Adnan Bhai.
Not much is known about the militant. “He must have been a fresh entrant into the southern (Kashmir) region,” the police official said.
There were no clashes in the area during the gunfight, owing to intense rains.
However, as the forces were being withdrawn, they came under heavy stone-pelting from local youth in Wagad village that is located between main town Tral and Aripal.
The forces, as per local sources, opened fire at the stone-pelting youth, leaving one of them critically injured.
“We have referred him to SMHS hospital,” the doctor at SDH Tral said.
Meanwhile a complete, spontaneous shutdown was observed in parts of Tral area to protest the militant’s killing and the firing on civilians.
