Bandipora: After killing two militants in an encounter in Bandipora district on Thursday, government forces killed three more in the same area today, police and army said.
The encounter had started Thursday afternoon when government forces were searching Shogbaba area near Sumlar village. In the exchange of gunfire that wet on till late Thursday evening, two militants were killed and the operation was still in progress. On Friday, after a massive exchange of gunfire, three more militants were killed, taking the toll to five.
The identity of the killed militants is yet to be ascertained.
Bandipora Senior Superintended of Police (SSP) Sheikh Zulfikar Azad told Kashmir Reader, “Three more militants were killed in the encounter on Friday, taking the total number of killed militants to five. Their identity remains to be ascertained.”
He said the operation is still continuing in the area.
Later Kashmir police zone in tweet said that the searches have been completed and arms and ammunition recovered from the killed militants.
Srinagar-based army spokesperson Col Rajesh Kalia also confirmed that five militants were killed in the Bandipora encounter.
A complete shutdown was observed in Bandipora on Friday to protests against the killing of militants. Day-long stone-pelting clashes were witnessed near Sumlar village while the counter-insurgency operation was going on.
