SRINAGAR: The State Human Right Commission (SHRC) has issued notice to Deputy Commissioner Baramulla and Superintendent of Police (SP) Sopore to file a detailed report answering under what circumstances the killing of Hurriyat activist Hakeem-ur-Rehman Sultani took place on September 8 of this month.
The Commission Chairman Justice (retd) Bilal Nazki issued notice on account of a petition filed by human rights activist Ahsan Untoo which stated that Sultani was killed in cold blooded murder by unidentified assailants and that it is in the interest of justice that such people be identified and punished.
The petitioner urged the SHRC to appoint a fact-finding team to probe the killing of Sultani and to find out why political workers and common people are being killed. The petitioner said that Sultani was killed when he was on the way to his home at Reshipora, Sopore, on 8 September.
The petitioner demanded compensation to the family members of Sultani, who has four daughters. Pertinently, the Joint Resistance Leadership has termed the killing of the activist as “gruesome”, while the police have blamed militants for the killing.
The petitioner pleaded before the Commission that whosoever is behind these killings should be unmasked and a proper investigation into these matters be conducted forthwith.
