Police arrest many in Kashmir capital, foil Ashura procession

Srinagar: Police on Friday arrested several Shia mourners who had managed to reach the civil lines area of the summer Capital, Srinagar.

Shia Muslims take out Ashura processions on the tenth Day of the first Islamic month (Muharram) to mark the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions.

However such processions are banned in Srinagar from 1989.

Witnesses said that despite restrictions and heavy deployments, several mourners managed to reach MA Road and started raising slogans like “Labaik Ya Hussain” however police swung into action and detained them.

The mourners were led by Shia leader affiliated with Hurriyat Conference (G) Nissar Hussain Rather. Nissar was among those who were arrested.

Earlier police used force to disperse a group of mourners at Dudshah Chowk..

Police sources termed the arrests as “preventive”.
