BUDGAM: A Panchayat Ghar was torched in Kultrech village in Chadoora area of Budgam District on Wednesday night. Despite the combined efforts of locals, police and firemen, the flames could not be doused.
Chadoora Station House Officer (SHO) Arshad Ahmad said that some “miscreants” had managed to burn down the Panchayat Ghar in the area.
“The locals and police officials along with fire brigade tried to douse the flames, but could not stop the fire,” he said.
He said police have registered a case in this regard and an investigation has been initiated.
Since September 16, when J&K Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Shaleen Kabra announced dates for Panchayat elections in the state – in nine phases from November 17 to December 11 – there have been a spate of arson bids targeting panchayat offices, mostly in south Kashmir. Various Panchayat Ghars have been set on fire at night but the flames have been doused before causing major harm to the buildings.
