Nursing students protest, demand release of classmate

SRINAGAR: Nursing students from different colleges of Srinagar on Tuesday held a protest demonstration here in Srinagar demanding the release of their classmate Muhammad Iqbal Rather.
Iqbal was arrested along with the truck driver Riaz Ahmad from a truck which bore the registration number JK03F 1476. Police claims three militants of Jaish-e-Muhammad also travelled in same truck before being killed in a gunfight a day later.
Iqbal Ahmad Rather, son of Abdul khaliq Rather, student of BSc Nursing at Sher-e- Kashmir Institute of Medical Science (SKIMS) Soura, resident of Futlipora village in Pakherpora area of Budgam, was arrested by police in Jammu area.
Scores of protesters from various Nursing colleges including Sher-e- Kashmir Institute of Medical Science (SKIMS) Soura , Government Medical college Srinagar , Bibi Halima Nursing college assembled here in Pratap Park and chanted slogans seeking release of Iqbal.
Mustaqua Jahan, Nursing student of SKIMS at Soura said, “Our student has been detained in an unknown case, we did not know about the case, why he was arrested. He is the most brilliant student in our college. He is enrolled in Bsc final year at SKIMS. We did not want his career be ruined. The government should release Iqbal on the Humanitarian basis.”
His another classmate Shehla Quareshi said Iqbal was going Jammu to seek an appointment with a doctor as his father is suffering from cancer. He has seven sisters and he can’t do this. We know him; we want to know where he has been kept. The allegations against him are totally baseless.” The protesting students appealed the governor to immediately release Iqbal.
