SRINAGAR: J&K Chief Electoral Officer Shaleen Kabar on Tuesday issued formal notification for the conduct of Phase I of Municipal Polls-2018. According to the notification, the last date for making nominations is 25th September, the date for scrutiny of nominations is 26th September, the last date for withdrawal of candidature is 28th September, and the date of polling is 8th October, from 7am to 2pm.
The notification has been issued for Srinagar Municipal Corporation (ward No. 16-17 and 74), Municipal Committee Kupwara (1 to 13 wards), Municipal Committee Handwara (1 to 13 wards), Municipal Committee Bandipora (1 to 17 wards), Municipal Council Baramulla (1 to 21 wards), Municipal Committee Budgam (1 to 13 wards), Municipal Committee Chadoora (1 to 13 wards), Municipal Committee Khansahib (1 to 07 wards), Municipal Committee Kulgam (1 to 13 wards), Municipal Committee Devsar (1 to 08 wards), Municipal Committee Achabal (1 to 08 wards), Municipal Committee Kokernag (1 to 13 wards), Municipal Committee Qazigund (1 to 07 wards), Municipal Committee Kargil (1 to 13 wards) and Municipal Committee Leh (1 to 13 wards) in Kashmir Division.
In Jammu Division the elections will be held in Phase-I in Jammu Municipal Corporation (wards 1 to 75), Municipal Committee Bishnah (1 to 13 wards), Municipal Committee Arnia (1 to 13 wards), Municipal Committee R.S.Pora (1 to 13 wards), Municipal Committee Ghomanhasan (1 to 07 wards), Municipal Committee Akhnoor (1 to 13 wards), Municipal Committee Jourian (1 to 07 wards), Municipal Committee Khour (1 to 13 wards), Municipal Committee Rajouri (1 to 17 wards), Municipal Committee Thanamandi (1 to 13 wards), Municipal Committee Nowshera (1 to 13 wards), Municipal Committee Sunderbani (1 to 13 wards), Municipal Committee Kalakote (1 to 07 wards), Municipal Council Poonch (1 to 17 wards) and Municipal Committee Surankote (1 to 13).
Deputy Commissioner Jammu Ramesh Kumar announced that municipal elections in Jammu district will be held during the 1st phase and the voting will take place on October 8
He said that for the first time Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be used in the municipal polls and elections will be on party-basis. He said 50 ROs have been appointed in the district for smooth conduct of elections. One EVM would be installed in each polling station with a reserve machine for the backup, he added.
Responding to media queries, he said foolproof security arrangements will be put in place to ensure smooth elections while exercise is on to identify sensitive and hyper sensitive polling stations .
The DC further informed that the Model Code of Conduct has already come into force and asked the candidates and political parties to follow the guidelines.
He said that voter awareness and training programmes will be conducted to ensure maximum voter turnout. The training programmes for polling officers will be conducted from September 25 to October 5, he said, adding that the DEO has been designated as appellant authority for the elections.
The DC appealed to all voters to take part in the democratic process.
