Anantnag: Unidentified persons set fire to three Panchayat Ghars in Pulwama and Shopian districts of south Kashmir late Mondayevening, causing minor damage to the structures before the fires were put out.
On Sunday evening, a similar attempt was made in Seer Jageer area of Tral in Pulwama district.
The attacks on panchayat offices have come immediately after the government announced dates for panchayat polls in the state.
The Tuesday night’s incidents were reported back to back, within an hour. The first, among the three, was reported from Nazneenpora area of Shopian district.
“The incident took place at about 9:45 PM Monday night,” a senior police official from the district said.
He said that some locals spotted flames coming out of the structure and informed the police.
“The fire was immediately doused and the structure was saved, barring some minor damages,” the official said, adding that a case over the incident has been registered at police station Keegam in the area.
At about 10:30 PM, another attempt to torch a Panchayat Ghar was made by unidentified people in Drubgam area of neighbouring Pulwama district.
A police source confirmed that the attempt was made in Drubgam area. “People of the area came out and police also reached the spot. The fire was doused soon and the structure has suffered only minor damages,” the police source told Kashmir Reader.
At about the same time another attempt was made in Nagbal area of Tral in Pulwama district, where an under-construction Panchayat Ghar was targeted.
