SRINAGAR: Rehbar-e-Taleem (ReT) teachers who are on indefinite hunger strike held a “mega protest demonstration” here on Sunday to press for their long pending demands.
ReT teachers, who are on hunger strike from last fourteen days, demand delinking of their salaries from Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and implementation of seventh pay commission. Dozens of the ReT teachers have been given medical aid after they fell unconscious during the hunger strike since September 3.
Abdul Qayoom Wani, chairman Teachers Joint Action Committee (TJAC) said that the “non-serious” approach of administration forced them to hold “mega protest demonstration” to press for their demands. “The government is only framing committees who do nothing which could benefit ReT teachers in any manner. Every committee formed by the government so far has failed to submit its report regarding our genuine demands,” he said.
In their meetings with State Education Secretary and Advisor to Governor, Khursheed Ganaie couple of days before, Wani said, nothing concrete has been done so far despite the demands have been termed as “legitimate” by the Advisor.
“Government is failing ReT teachers from the day they were shifted to Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in the year 2003-2004 despite the fact that they were recruited by the state government. Teachers are not even being paid on time under MHRD,” he said.
Wani said that the teachers have got the benefit of all pay commissions including sixth pay commission but are now “denied the seventh pay commission” since April this year. He said that 143 corers of rupees per month is the salary budget for ReT teachers and only 25 corers is the total budget for seventh pay commission if implemented by the government.
The teachers who are on hunger strike said that they have rotational shifts for participation in the strike, so as the class work of students in the respective schools would not be affected.
They said that they have organised the “mega protest demonstration” on September 16 because it is Sunday, so as the class work of students will not suffer.
The teachers said that they are ready to “negotiate” with the government only in case of “result oriented negotiation” in their favour else they are on indefinite hunger strike till their demands are fulfilled.
The teachers appealed the government to fulfil their demands as soon as possible and put an “end to this nuisance” as the builder of nation (teacher) is in the insurgence. If the “teacher is in menace” the whole “nation is in perils”.
