SRINAGAR: Militants travelling in a Kashmir-bound truck fired upon a CRPF naka party on the Jammu-Srinagar l highway near Jajjar Kotli in Jammu district, after their truck was intercepted at the naka checkpoint.
The incident took place at about 8 in the morning, police said.
Director General of Police, Jammu Range, Bhimsen Tuti told Kashmir Reader that the truck was travelling to Kashmir when it was intercepted by security personnel during a routine check at the check post on the highway at Jajjar Kothli, signalled a truck bearing registration number JK03F-1476 to stop, but it sped away.
He said that a civilian was injured in the militants’ firing.
The injured civilian has been identified as Ganesh Dass, 54. He was taken to GMC hospital Jammu for medical attention. Ganesh Dass works in the government’s sericulture department, sources said.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu, Vivek Gupta, told Kashmir Reader that a group of militants fired shots at security forces manning the checkpoint in Jajjar Kothli. The militants, he said, fled from the spot after attacking the security forces.
Later, the truck was apprehended but the militants travelling in it had escaped. The search of the truck yielded one AK-rifle and 3 magazines. The truck driver and the conductor have been taken into custody for questioning, police said.
Soon after the attack, senior security officials and additional reinforcements were rushed to the area, and a massive search operation was launched on the Srinagar-Jammu highway.
Sources said that 2-3 militants between the age group of 18 and 22 years were seen on the run near Suketar village near Katra crossing.
“Two of them were seen with AK rifles and the third one with a pistol. One of them was wearing a Pathan dress and two were wearing trousers and shirt,” police said, adding that security around Vaishno Devi shrine has also been beefed up.
DIG Jammu Bhimsen Tuti refuted news reports that said two CRPF personnel were injured in the attack. He told Kashmir Reader that only one civilian was injured in the militants’ firing. A high alert has been sounded in Jammu division and all security
forces have been asked to remain vigilant, so that the militants do not escape the combing operation in the area.
