Writer, Prof Rita Jitendra was former secretary of Cultural Academy
Srinagar: A leading educationist and writer, Prof Dr Rita Jitendra Monday died in the studios of Doordarshan Kendra Srinagar while speaking in a live broadcast of ‘Good Morning J&K’ program.
Medical Superintendent SMHS hospital, Dr Saleem Tak told Kashmir Reader that she was brought dead and had died due to sudden cardiac arrest.
“The cardiac arrest may have taken place due to heart arrhythmia which is an abnormal heart beating,” Dr Tak said.
“We have completed the legal formalities and handed over the body to her family,” he said.
Tanveer Mir, the producer of the program, said Prof Rita suffered a sudden choke and collapsed.
“It was around 8.28 am when she suddenly stopped talking and collapsed. When we shifted her to SMHS hospital, doctors declared her brought dead. It’s shocking for us as it is first incident in the Doordarshan history when any guest died in a live program,” he said.
Zahid Mukhtar, a senior writer and artist, was hosting the show with a young co-host.
“As part of the TV profession, we managed to run the whole program to keep the broadcast uninterrupted. But we are very saddened with this incident and we pray for the departed soul,” the producer said.
Prof Rita Jitendra was an educationist, artist, writer, social activist and former secretary of J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL).
The JKAACL staff condoled the demise of and its Vice President Zafar Iqbal Manhas termed Prof Rita’s death as a major
loss for the world of literature.
Chairing a condolence meeting Manhas said, “Prof. Rita Jitendra will be remembered for her extensive works, which covered diverse subjects ranging from theatre, culture, academics and more.”
