Budgam: An unexploded shell was found and defused in Khag area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Sunday, police said.
The live unexploded mortar shell was recovered in Malik Mohalla in Khag area of the district, they said.
A bomb disposal squad was sent to the spot, which destroyed the shell, an official said.
ources said that some people found the shell near a water stream and promptly reported to the police.
The shell has reached the area through the stream from Tosamaidan, which was used as a firing range by the Indian Army for almost fifty years.
“Acting swiftly, police rushed to spot and disposed off the shell without causing any harm,” DSP Magam Showkat Ahmad said.
More than 30 deaths have been reported in the area surrounding Tosamaidan due to the explosion of unexploded shells in the last three decades.
Moreover, hundreds of civilians have been wounded many animals have also died.
Recently, on Aug 12, a youth on picnic was killed and another lost his leg when a live shell exploded in Tosamaidan meadows.
