Anantnag: A Lashkar militant from Kulgam was killed and a policeman injured in a brief shootout between policemen and militants here in Ranipora area of Achabal in Anantnag district Friday night.
The slain militant was identified as Bilal Ahmad Dar, resident of Yaripora area in Kulgam district. Dar was an active militant for some three months now.
The shootout, a police official said, took place at about 1:00 AM past Friday midnight.
“Militants believed to be three to four in number attacked a police picket guarding a minority community in Ranipora area of Achabal,” the police official said.
He said that the alert policemen acted fast and duly retaliated to the gunfire.
“The exchange of fire continued for a brief while and resulted in the killing of a militant. A policeman was injured in the firing,” the official said.
He added that the injured policeman was immediately evacuated to hospital and is out of danger.
A contingent of forces reached the area and cordoned it off following the shootout. A manhunt to nab the militants was launched in the area.
“The militants had managed to flee by then but two cars, which they apparently used to travel in, have been recovered from the area,” the official said.
Police have detained the owner of one of the cars. He is a resident of Bijbehara town in Anantnag district. “He is being questioned,” a police official from Bijbehara told Kashmir Reader.
Mobile internet services were snapped in Anantnag and Kulgam districts in the wee hours of Saturday morning. Also, train services on the Srinagar-Banihal track were suspended for the day.
The body of the militant, meanwhile, was handed over to the family early Saturday morning.
Thousands of people attended the funeral of the slain militant in Yaripora, amid pro-freedom and anti-India sloganeering.
Bilal was buried at the local martyrs’ graveyard.
