Sopore: A Kashmiri CRPF trooper has been arrested on charges of rape and torture of a woman in Sopore, the crime coming to light when the victim decided to go public after two years of sexual abuse by the accused.
The victim, a woman of about 50 years of age, has alleged that the trooper, who was posted at the CRPF’s Chankipora camp right opposite her home, barged into her house two years ago and raped her. She said he filmed the ordeal on his mobile phone and threatened to make it public if she reported the rape to anyone.
“I was at my home in my kitchen and everybody was out when I heard the sound of the main door opening. As soon as I reached the lobby, I saw the CRPF man who used to regularly harass me whenever I used to go out with my kids to their school or to the market. He used to follow me in plain clothing and used to shout at me from behind. When I saw him inside my house I was quite frightened,” the woman told Kashmir Reader.
“He sprayed something on my face which made me unconscious. When I opened my eyes, I was naked. He had raped me. He warned me that if I told anyone about it, he would make the video public. He also warned me that if I ever refused him in the future, I would have to face dire consequences,” the woman said.
The rape and blackmail went on for many months, she said. The trooper was stationed in the camp opposite the victim’s home. Whenever he got an opportunity, he would walk into the house and sexually abuse her, she said.
“I was helpless, unable to tell about my plight to anybody. I did what he instructed me to do for almost two years. He would sometime call me and tell me to come out of home. He would then pick me up in some vehicle and take me to some unknown destination where more men were waiting. They would all rape me, and then he would drop me back. This happened several times in the past two years,” the woman said.
“I finally gathered courage and told my husband about my ordeal,” she said.
The husband of the victim, who is a doctor by profession, said that his world turned upside down when his wife told him of her ordeal. “I was furious and went straight to the CRPF camp, where I told the inspector about it. He assured me cooperation but said they have no Kashmiri trooper posted at the camp. We then went to Sopore police station and registered an FIR against this CRPF man on August 23 last month. He was arrested yesterday,” the husband said.
The CRPF camp is situated for the past 23 years in front of the victim’s house at Chankipora locality of Sopore town.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Sopore, Mashkoor Zargar, confirmed the arrest of the accused CRPF man to Kashmir Reader.
“As soon as the case was registered, we started investigating and yesterday we arrested the accused,” he said.
The accused has been identified as Iqbal Ahmad, son of Abdul Rasheed, resident of Garkote Uri in Baramulla district. He is currently posted in the CRPF’s 179 Battalion.
A case has been registered against the CRPF soldier under FIR number 234/2018 under RPC Sections 452, 376, 506, police sources said.
