Srinagar: Reacting to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval’s statement that a separate Constitution for Jammu and Kashmir was an “aberration”, Hurriyat (M) chairperson Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday termed the statement as being in complete “disregard of historical facts and ground realities”.
Mirwaiz, who is also Kashmir’s chief cleric, said that Doval’s statement showed his arrogance and “deliberate ignorance” of Jammu and Kashmir’s disputed status and the will of its people.
Addressing the Friday congregation at the historic Jamia Masjid here, the Mirwaiz that Doval’s statement had unmasked the real face of Government of India. “The ultimate aim of the Government of India has been to hold on to the territory of J&K at any cost, with total disregard for the will of its inhabitants,” Mirwaiz said.
The Mirwaiz said that J&K was both a dispute and a humanitarian issue. “It’s about the relentless struggle of the people who want to choose their destiny. The same stands endorsed by the world community at the UN,” he said.
The firebrand orator said that the passage of time did not render obsolete the UN resolutions on Kashmir. “Had it been so, the fourth generation of Kashmiris since would not be rebellious, protesting on the streets of every nook and corner of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
The Mirwaiz said that the presence of lakhs of Indian troops in J&K was testimony to the fact that the region was being controlled by India by the barrel of the gun.
The only way forward, the Mirwaiz said, was to understand the concerns and aspirations of people of J&K and address them accordingly, either through allowing people to exercise right of self determination or through deliberations at the table among all stakeholders, including India, Pakistan and the people of J&K.
