Court imposes Rs 3 lakh fine on beverages company

JAMMU: A local court has imposed a penalty of Rs 3 Lakh on Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd in a case of misbranding filed by Food Safety department.
As per spokesperson of Food Safety department, a team led by Assistant Commissioner, Food Safety Jammu, Parvesh Kumar inspected the premises of M/S Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd, Gangyal Jammu and lifted the samples of Sweetened Carbonated Water Brand Fanta and seized the available stock of 1605 boxes containing 14,445 bottles of 2 litres each. He said the samples were sent to the laboratory for analysis which reported ‘misbranded’. He said further intimation notice was served to the firm to appeal against the report of food analyst within a period of 30 days, to which the firm gave a refusal in writing.
Later, prosecution against the firm was launched by Food Safety Officer, Daleep Singh in the Court of Adjudicating Officer (Additional District Magistrate) Jammu.
After hearing both the parties on different dates, the court decided the case and imposed a penalty of Rs 3 lakh against M/S Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd, Gangyal Jammu and passed order for destruction of seized stock of said product which cost Rs 8,14,728.
