Srinagar: The pro freedom-camp on Tuesday sharply criticised the cordon and search operation (CASO) policy in Kashmir and condemned the killing of civilian Fayaz Ahmad Wani during an anti-CASO protest in Chewa Kalan, Pulwama by the government forces on Monday.
The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) led by Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik in a statement said cordon and search operations are unjustified and against all principles of humanity. “Holding people hostage in their own homes, thrashing them, vandalising their property, detaining youth and killing civilians with impunity and without remorse is an absolute state aggression,” they said.
The leadership said that despite the “policy of repression” across South Kashmir, the resolve of the people in this region to stand up against it is unwavering.
However, on the call of JRL, scores of leaders and activists assembled at the historic Jamia Masjid Srinagar on Tuesday to register their protest against the forces action in south Kashmir. The protest was led by JKLF chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik, who strongly denounced the crackdown in this province.
Malik in a statement said if forces and the authorities don’t stop “the open aggression”, the leadership won’t hesitate in asking people to hit the streets.
Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) while denouncing the cordon and search operation (CASO) policy in Kashmir and the killing of civilian Fayaz Ahmad Wani, said, “CASO is the main reason for civilian killings in Kashmir as the government forces always go berserk during such operations.”
A DFP spokesperson in a statement said, “Search operations are aimed at intimidating people,” adding the government forces are not held accountable for their actions and this encourages them to violate the basic rights of people.”
The spokesperson said that people are deprived of their basic fundamental rights and are harassed on daily basis. “The efforts are afoot to crush the genuine dissent of people,” he said.
Dukhtaran-e-Millat (DeM) while condemning the killing of civilian and using pellets on the protesters in south Kashmir, said the authorities wanted to crush the genuine aspirations of people.
In a statement, the spokesperson of DeM Riffat Fatima said, “The government of India is trying to intimidate the people of Kashmir and get them into submission so that they do not raise their genuine demands.”
“They are afraid that the genuine voices of Kashmir are reaching the world. They do not like it and want it curbed,” she added.
Nation Front termed the killing of civilian Fayaz Ahmad Wani as shocking, and said that killings of unarmed civilians is not acceptable to the civilised world.
A spokesperson of National Front while expressing grief and sorrow over the killing, said using force on protesting civilians is an uncivilised act and cannot be defended.
The spokesman strongly condemned the crackdown on dozens of villages in south Kashmir and harassing of locals in the name of search operation. He said that all such acts are aimed at making people to understand that they cannot even demand for their democratic rights in a democratic way.
