SRINAGAR: The family members and relatives of Sarjan Barkati on Tuesday held a protest demonstration demanding his immediate release. They threatened to go for hunger strike if he is not released till September 17.
Languishing in jail since 2016, Sarjan Barkati, a resident of Reban village in south Kashmir’s Shopian district shot to fame during uprising in the same year due to his rhythmic sloganeering and is known as “Azadi Chacha” in south Kashmir
Family members and other relatives of Barkati assembled here in press enclave and shouted slogans against the authorities for not releasing “ailing” Barkati.
Wife of Barkati, Shabroza said that her husband was arrested in year 2016 uprising and has not been released yet and she has to look after two children in absence of her husband.
“After the arrest of my husband my children are not able to focus on their studies and have stopped going to the school. I mostly remain busy in courts to seek bail for my husband. As there is no one to take care of their expenditures, we face terrible hardships,” she said.
She requested the authorities of Jammu and Kashmir to release her husband.
Sugra Barkati, daughter of Sarjan Barkati said that she fails to focus on studies.
She said that if authorities will not release him, then “jail us” as well “at least we will be with our father. And will be free from this troubles of life. Our mother mostly remains busy in seeking bail for our father. We too want to study and want to live a normal life like others,” she said.
The protesting relatives said that if Barkati is not released till September 17 they will go for a hunger strike along with other people from district Kulgam.
The protesters said that he (Barkati) was even denied participation in his maternal uncle’s funeral.
