Srinagar: The family members and other close relatives of Sarjan Barkati, who is languishing in jail since 2016, on Tuesday held a protest demonstration in Srinagar demanding his immediate release. They threatened if Barkati is not released till September 17, they will go for a hunger strike.
Barkati, a resident of Reban village in south Kashmir’s Shopian district gained name during 2016 uprising due to his rhythmic sloganeering, and was commonly known as “Azadi Chacha”.
The family members and other relatives of Barkati assembled here in press enclave and shouted the slogans against the authorities for not releasing “ailing” Barkati.
Shabroza, wife of Barkati said “my husband was arrested in 2016 uprising and not release yet. I have two children to look after in absence of my husband. After the arrest of my husband, the education of my children has been badly affected because there is no one to take care of their expenditures.”
“I request the authorities of Jammu and Kashmir State to release of my husband,” said Shabroza.
The protesters said that if Barkati is not released till September, 17 they will sit on a hunger strike along with other people from September 18.
