Pulwama: Violent protests broke out in Murran and Chewakalan villages of this south Kashmir district where government forces launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) this morning.

Dozens of youth hit the streets in the two villages after special operations group (SOG) of police, army and paramilitary CRPF launched a CASO this morning, witnesses told Kashmir Reader. Angered by the CASO, witnesses said the youth staged a protest and clashed with government forces by hurling rocks at them.

“The clashes intensified when the government forces used tear smoke shells and fired pellets to disperse the protesters,” Bashir Ahmad of Murran told Kashmir Reader.

He said a few boys suffered minor injuries in the ding-dong battles with the government forces.

Witnesses identified one of the injured youth as Fayaz Ahmad of Chewakalan. Ahmad, they said suffered serious pellet injuries during the clashes.

The clashes were going on when this report was filed.

Pertinently, government forces in the wee hours today launched a massive CASO in at least a dozen villages here in search of militants.
