Srinagar: Apprehensions of massive unrest over the hearing on Article 35A in the Supreme Court have led to cancellations of mega marriage celebrations in Kashmir Valley.
The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) has called for a two-day shutdown on August 30 and 31 to protest the scheduled hearing in Supreme Court on August 31. Families that had planned marriage celebrations around these days have now cancelled or modified the plans.
“The shutdowns we have seen earlier made us revise our decision. The marriage of one of my close relatives was scheduled on August 30, but we have cancelled it. We believe less invitees will turn up, which will spoil the occasion,” said Javaid Ahmad whose nephew was getting married on August 30.
Javaid on Tuesday issued marriage cancellation notice in three leading newspapers. On the same day, there were 28 notices of marriage cancellations in six prominent newspapers. The newspapers have been publishing cancellation notices since the agitation on Article 35A began gaining ground.
The last time such cancellations were witnessed was during the 2016 uprising.
The cancellations have come at the last minute, when all preparations for the marriages including distribution of invitation cards had been done.
