HC seeks info on safety measures of mining sites

Srinagar: Srinagar: The J&K High Court Tuesday directed the state authorities to inform the court about safety measures for mining sites in the state, along with a checklist of mining sites.
The Division Bench of Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Alok Aradhe told the counsel representing Government of India, Tahir Shamsi, the counsel appearing in the petition, M I Qadri, and the Geology and Mining Department to provide the check list in a combined form before the court. The court also sought information about appointments and prescribed qualifications for different mining activities.
The petitioner counsel told the court that the authorities of the Industries and Commerce, and Geology and Mining departments, have ignored the objective of supervision and inspection of the mining activities in the state which has adversely affected the landscape of the J&K, and has caused heavy loss of lives, property besides adversely affecting the environment, and polluting air, water and soil.
