Anantnag: A fierce encounter broke out this morning between militants and government forces in Muniward area of this south Kashmir district.

In the wee hours today, a contingent of special operations group (SOG) personnel joined by army laid a siege around Muniward village here and started cordon and search operation (CASO), witnesses told Kashmir Reader.

When the government forces started advances, the militants hiding in the village opened fire at them in a bid to break the cordon.

“The government forces returned the fire triggering off a fierce gun-battle,” witnesses said.

The exchange of gunfire was going on when the last reports came in.

Meanwhile, restrictions have been imposed in parts of this south Kashmir district amid fears of wide-spread protests by the locals, witnesses said.

Government forces have also blocked many roads connecting Anantnag with the neighbouring south Kashmir districts to restrict movement of people, they added.
