KUPWARA: A massive fire broke out in the army’s 45 RR headquarters camp in Machil sector along the Line of Control (LOC) in frontier Kupwara district on Tuesday afternoon. Several barracks were gutted completely and a large quantity of arms and other items, including oil drums, were damaged in the fire, official sources said.
The official sources said that the fire broke out inside the camp at 12:30pm Tuesday. Panic soon spread in the camp as some soldiers tried to douse the flames while others began to shift arms and ammunition and other valuable goods to a safe place.
The sources said that more than half a dozen quarters were gutted completely while two quarters sustained minor damage in the fire.
Some sources said that four army soldiers were injured while shifting arms and other goods, but officials denied this.
Soon after the fire broke out, a large number of fire fighters including fire vehicles of the army reached the spot and began to douse the flames. The cause of the fire has not been confirmed as yet.
SSP Kupwara AS Dinkar confirmed to Kashmir Reader that several quarters built of wood were gutted in the fire in the army camp. He said that there were no reports of any injuries.
