Srinagar: The Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC) held a protest demonstration here on Sunday against attempts to “tinker with Article 35A”. The protesters demanded the immediate dismissal of petitions challenging Article 35A in the Supreme Court.
Led by EJAC president and trade union leader Abdul Qayoom Wani, scores of employees from various departments assembled in Pratap Park and staged a demonstration in favour of Article 35A. The protesters chanted pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.
Wani said that if the state subject law is harmed by any means, a “state-wide agitation” would arise in Jammu and Kashmir and every single resident will be ready to “spill blood”.
“We are ready to safeguard the state subject law by our blood. All the citizens have united irrespective of their religion or region,” he said. “These cheap tactics of Indian government against the state of Jammu and Kashmir will never be tolerated.”
Wani said that this was the first time in the history of Jammu and Kashmir that all religious, non-religious, civil and political organisations had united to defend the state subject law. He said this was a “do or die” situation for every citizen of J&K.
Wani appealed to all organisations to not back down till the “cheap attempts” to meddle with the state subject law were “eradicated”. He said that every employee will protest to the “extreme” to defend the unique status of their motherland. “We will protest till our last breath,” he said.
The EJAC announced it will cooperate with every religious and non-religious organisation in defending Article 35A. “We are with the people of Jammu and Kashmir. We want Article 35A and Article 370 to remain intact, as does every citizen here,” Wani said.
