Handwara: Clashes broke out between local youths and government forces during a cordon and search operation (CASO) in a village in Langate area of Handwara on Tuesday.
Sources said that a CASO was launched by the army’s 30 RR, SOG of police, and other government forces in Yaroo village of Langate in police district Handwara on Tuesday afternoon, following some gunshots heard amid orchards in Yaroo and nearby Udipora and Ganapora villages. Sources said that some 15 gunshots were heard in the orchards.
Soon after, government forces cordoned off the area and started searches. The forces also fired gunshots towards several suspected spots in the orchards but could not locate anyone.
Sources said that after some time, scores of youths of Yaroo village took to the streets and began pelting the government forces with stones. The forces fired dozens of tear smoke shells near the Jamia Masjid in Yaroo village. The clashes continued for hours and several youths and policemen sustained minor injuries.
The sources said that the army believes 2 to 3 militants are still in the area. Sniffer dogs were used to locate the militants, local sources said.
The clashes were still going on and the CASO was still underway when last reports came in.
