Students injured in police action

Baramulla: Several students of SSM college at Parihaspora Pattan in Baramulla district were injured in clashes with police on Saturday after a tussle over a land dispute between the college and another party.
The SSM College has a long pending land dispute with Ansari family (Headed formerly by former minister and influential cleric Iftikhar Ansari) at Parihaspora. Ansari’s son, Imran Ansari is also an influential cleric and currently legislator from Pattan.
Sources said that some students of the college entered into the disputed land resulting into clash. They said that the some people, “mostly guards paid by Ansaris” did not allow the students to enter the disputed land, but the students forced their way in, even pulling out the wire barrier.
Following the tussle a police team reached the spot leading to further clashes with students.
The students hurled stones while police use pepper gas and tear smoke shells to disperse them. Clashes continued for an hour.
A senior professor of the college said that two students were injured in police action “when police used force to oust students from our own land”. He said they were shifted to hospital for treatment.
“We were in our own college land but some goons attacked us, and we also retaliate resulting a minor clash, however after few minutes a team of police reached the spot and attacked us by tear smoke shells and sticks in which several students were injured,” a student said.
Vice chairman of the SSM college, Mrs Dilafroz Qazi said that some students of the college along with officials were on a “survey camp” on our “own land close to the college”, when some people along with police attacked them.
“Our students and some officials were in our own land for a survey camp, but in the meantime some people of Imran Sahib (Imran Ansari) and police reached the spot and tried to disrupt our programme. They (men of Imran Ansari) not only hurled stones on our students they also called police who also fire tear smoke shells on our students, but no one hurt” she said.
SSP Baramulla Imtiyaz Hussain said that police has registered an FIR against the school authorities for “involving/instigate students for violence to settle the dispute which is basically a private issue between owners of college and some other party.” He said that there is a status quo order from court and both parties have been directed to adhere to court orders.
MLA Pattan Imran Ansari is reportedly out of town.
