Hundreds of kanals of land retrieved

Pulwama: A massive anti-encroachment drive was held in forest areas of Romshi Range in Pulwama and in Chowan area of Shopian district on Saturday, during which hundreds of kanals of forest land were retrieved from the land grabbers.
Forest Department achieved the retrieval as part of an anti-encroachment drive in Chowan and Romshi Forest Range, said Range Officer (RO) Mohammad Shafi on Saturday.
The team constituted by the Divisional Forest Officer, Shopian, carried out the drive on the instruction of the state government to remove encroachments from forest lands in the district.
The department staff faced stiff resistance, including stone pelting. However, it succeeded in retrieving hundreds of kanal of land from the possession of various encroachers, he added.
The team dismantled boundary walls and removed the brush wood fencing put up by the encroachers. A residential house, a kottha and other walls built on land encroached on by locals here were also demolished.The department is taking all measures to prevent encroachment on forest land at every cost, Shafi said.
The drive was led by RO Romshi, Pulwama, with other staff.
