Srinagar: Nearly four months after the superannuation of the last principal of Islamia College of Science and Commerce (ICSC), Hawal, the Higher Education Department has appointed a new principal to the college.
In an order issued Tuesday, Commissioner Secretary Higher Education, Sarita Chauhan has appointed Yaseen Ahmad Shah, who is currently serving as Principal, Government Degree College Ganderbal as the principal ICSC.
“In the interest of administration, Mr Yaseen Ahmad Shah, Principal Government Degree College Ganderbal is transferred and posted as Principal, Islamia College of Science and Commerce, Srinagar against an available vacancy,” reads the order.
The order added that Shah will continue to hold the additional charge of Principal, GDC Ganderbal “till further orders”.
A PhD in Arabic, Shah was appointed the first registrar to the Cluster University, Srinagar in January last year which started its maiden academic session the same year.
On June 19 this year, Shah was however posted as Principal, GDC Ganderbal by the Higher Education Department while as Abdul Hamid, the then principal of the college was deputed as Registrar, Central University in Shah’s place.
Shah has also served as Principal, S P College, Lal Chowk before he was appointed Registrar, Cluster University, Srinagar.
Shah told Kashmir Reader that he will join his new posting on Monday.
The lack of a principal, sources said, was hurting the prospect of ICSC- which has already been conferred the status of a State Autonomous College by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2010, the year it became a deemed university.
The college, which was not accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2010, started practically working as an autonomous college in 2013.
Standing out from rest of the colleges in the valley, ICSC has a separate budget and a governing board with the state head (Governor at present) as its chairman.
The UGC has also conferred the institute with the status of College with Potential for Academic excellence (CPA).
