Militants fire on army in Handwara, soldier killed

Handwara: An army soldier was killed in a brief gunfight with militants in Handwara’s Qaziabad village on Friday.
Army’s official spokesperson said Rifleman Ram Babu Shahi sustained bullet injury during the gun battle at Kachlo, in Baramulla district. He was provided immediate first-aid and evacuated to 92 Base Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries. 
Sources said a patrolling party of army’s 32 RR was fired upon by militants in village Kachlo in Qaziabad area under police station Kralgund. The army said that following the attack, a CASO (cordon and search operation) was launched. However, militants had escaped from the spot.
Local sources said that they heard about 8 to 10 gunshots fired from one side in Kachlo village at about 12:45am, after which the army launched a CASO and searched several houses in the village.
The spokesperson said that the 15 Corps Commander and all ranks paid homage to the slain soldier.
