Budgam youth drowns in Jehlum at Safa Kadal

Srinagar: A youth hailing from Budgam district drowned in River Jhelum near the SafaKadal locality of Srinagar Thursday afternoon.
Shabir Ahmad Sheikh, 20, son of Abdul Rahman Sheikh, resident of Sitaharan Khag in Budgam district, was according to local residents, bathing his sheep in the river, when he slipped and was washed away at around 1.30 pm Thursday.
According to Shabir’s family, he was staying in Srinagar, and working as a labourer.
The family accused the authorities of adopting non-serious approach in efforts to retrieve the body.
“It has been more than 24 hours since he drowned, the water divers have not arrived yet to fish out the body,” a family member said.
Director State Disaster Rescue Force, Aamir Ali said they have deputed a team with two boats to fish out the body.
“It has not been found yet. The search operation is still on,” Ali said.
“We need to follow a set procedure to depute water divers so it may take time,” he said. “Till than the same procedure will continue from tomorrow morning”.
An official from Police Station SafaKadal said, “We are doing our part to fish out the body as the search is still going on.”
“The family is waiting for the body of deceased so as to perform last rites,” said Mushaq Ahmad Sheikh, a family member. “But the authorities have failed us”.
“We request the higher authorities to fish out the body as soon as possible,” he said.
