Nikas residents charge army of highhandedness, stage protest

Pulwama: The residents of Nikas village of this south Kashmir district on Thursday charged army of highhandedness and sought immediate removal of their camp from Haal area.

The residents of Arbal, Nikas here hit the streets this afternoon and staged anti-army protest alleging that the soldiers were harassing youth to create a web of informers.

“The army men snatch identity cards of the boys and ask them to collect it from Haal camp. When the boys visit the camp, they are beaten and forced to become informers,” locals alleged.

The locals said that the Haal camp was a nuisance and sought its immediate removal.

Defense spokesperson Rajesh Kalia refuted the allegations leveled by the villagers.

“No one is being harassed by the army and no one is being called to the camp. These allegations are baseless,” he said.
