Clashes break out in Srinagar’s Old City

Srinagar: Clashes broke out on Friday in old city of Srinagar after youth hit the streets and staged demonstrations against the assault on the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

Groups of youth after offering Friday prayers tried to take out a procession from the historic Jamia Masjid in the old city of Nowhatta here against the attempts being made to abrogate Article-35A, which grants special rights to the people of Kashmir, witnesses said. Chanting slogans, the protesters threw rocks at the government forces that were deployed on the entrance of the masjid.

“The govt forces chased tried to chase away the youth with batons. However, the youth regrouped and continued attacking uniformed men with stones,” witnesses said.

The clashes were going on when the last reports came in.
