Baramulla: One more militant was killed by the army on Thursday morning in Vigi hills in Rafiabad area of Baramulla district, a day after four militants were killed in the area, the army said.
A senior army officer said that four militants were killed on Wednesday and one more militant, who was hiding in the hilly area, was killed Thursday morning.
The officer said that the army and other government forces had received information a few days ago about the presence of a group of militants in Vigi hills in the upper belt of Rafiabad. He said a joint operation was started by the army’s 32 RR and 9 Para regiment, in which five militants were killed.
The officer said that the army had recovered all the five bodies, along with war-like stores from the site of the encounter. The identity of the slain militants has still not been ascertained, he said.
A senior police officer said that the army had not yet handed over the bodies to police, which is why their identities or affiliation could not be ascertained. “When they will hand over the bodies to police, we will able to say anything about them,” the police officer said.
A source said that the group of militants had recently infiltrated into this side of Kashmir from the Pakistani side and the army had received information about them in advance several days ago.
The source said that the army’s search operation in the Vigi hills continued for the second day on Thursday and a helicopter has been put into service to search for other militants. However, there is no report yet of any fresh contact with other militants, sources said.
The area is a remote one, far up in the mountains of Vigi Top, so this reporter could not verify the events from independent sources.
