Bodies yet to be recovered; daylong gunfight continued amid rain
BARAMULLA: Four militants have been killed in an ongoing encounter that started early morning at Vigi Rafiabad, Sopore, in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, the army said on Wednesday.
Army spokesperson Col RK Panday told Kashmir reader that four militants have been killed in the encounter that still continues in Rafiabad area.
Official sources told Kashmir Reader that a fierce gunfight started between army soldiers and a group of militants in the hills of Rafiabad on Wednesday morning.
They said that the army had received information of presence of a group of militants in the woods of Vigi mountain range in Rafiabad.
As Army’s 32 RR and 9 Para commandos reached the area, militants fired upon them, resulting in a gunfight that continued throughout the day amid rain, the official sources said.
Director General of Police SP Vaid earlier tweeted that five militants were trapped in Rafiabad forests and the encounter was going on.
SSP Sopore Javid Iqbal told reporters in the evening that an operation was launched by the army and other government forces after receiving specific information about the presence of militants in the area.
“As of now, we have not recovered the body of any militant,” the SSP said, adding that full details will be given tomorrow after proper searches in the area.
Vigi is a mountain range between the hills of Uri and Rafiabad, and also connects with the hills of Handwara. It was considered a safe route for militants during the period of peaked armed militancy in the 1990s.
A few years ago, five militants were killed by the army in this area and one Pakistani militant, Sajad Hussain, was captured alive.
