Bandipora: A gun battle that began at 1am in the night along the Line of Control (LoC) in Gurez valley left four army men, including a Major-rank officer, and two unidentified militants dead in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Tuesday.
Official sources told Kashmir Reader that a group of eight militants infiltrated to this side of the LoC and engaged soldiers from the army’s 36 RR unit in a gunfight in Nane sector in Baktoor, Gurez, after they came face-to-face with an army patrol. The sources said four of the militants retreated back across the LoC but two were killed in the gunfight while two are still hiding in the area.
The army spokesperson confirmed that four soldiers, including an officer, and two militants were killed in the encounter.
Sources identified the slain soldiers as Major KP Rane, Havaldars Jamie Singh and Vikramjeet, and Rifleman Mandeep.
The official sources said that the firing began at 1am and continued overnight. Senior Superintendent of Police Bandipora, Sheikh Zulfikar Azad, told Kashmir Reader that the army reacted after noticing militant activity in the area.
An official said that bodies of the slain militants had not been recovered yet and searches were on to find them.
