Shutdown in Anantnag on militant’s anniversary

Anantnag: A shutdown was observed Saturday in Anantnag town on the first death anniversary of a local militant, Yawar Nazir Shergujri.
Shergujri was killed in Kanelwan area of Anantnag district on this day last year, during a gunfight with government forces. A civilian was also shot dead during the gunfight. A resident of Shirpora area in main town Anantnag, Shergujri was part of the militant outfit Hizb-ul-Mujahideen. He was killed only 15 days after he joined the ranks. He was a student before he joined the Hizb ranks. The people in Anantnag observed a spontaneous shutdown to commemorate his first death anniversary.
All shops and other commercial establishments in the town remained closed throughout the day on Saturday. Many schools, offices and other places of work also remained closed in the main town.
Traffic too was thin on the roads. There however were no reports of any clashes anywhere in the town.
Other parts of the Anantnag district remained normal though. Moreover, people thronged the grave of Shergujri and offered prayers for the departed soul.
