Srinagar: Scores of people on Friday staged demonstrations in the Old City of the capital city here against the attempts to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

Groups of youth after offering congregational Friday prayers took out a procession from historic Jamia Masjid in the Old City of Nowhatta this afternoon, witnesses told Kashmir Reader. Chanting slogans, the people, mostly youth were protesting against the move to revoke Article-35A, which grants special rights and privileges to permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir.

On reaching Rajouri Kadal, the protesters were intercepted by CRPF troopers and the policemen that were deployed in advance.

“Angry youth pelted rocks at the government forces after their procession was stopped. In retaliation, the government forces burst tear gas canisters to disperse the protesters. This led to outbreak of clashes in the area,” a witness told Kashmir Reader.

The outbreak of clashes prompted the shopkeepers to down their shutters. The movement of traffic was also affected, witnesses said.
