Srinagar: A Lashkar-e-Toiba militant on Friday night was killed in a brief encounter with government forces in a village in Shopian district of south Kashmir.
A contingent of army’s 44 RR personnel appeared in Killora village of Shopian this evening and launched cordon and search operation, a senior police official told Kashmir Reader. As the cordon was being laid, the militants hiding in the area opened fire upon the army to flee from their dragnet.
“The army returned the fire triggering off a gunfight. In the exchange of fire, one unknown militant was killed,” the official said.
Official sources identified the slain militant as Umar Malik of Malikgund, Shopian.
Army spokesperson, Rajesh Kalia told Kashmir Reader that one militant has been killed in the ongoing encounter. He said that the operation was still in the progress.
