Srinagar: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation has carried out demolition of various illegal constructions razed across the city.
During its week-long programme to tackle the ever-growing illegal construction that has come up across different wards, it razed eight such structures across the city.
Several structures have been removed in the major demolition drive that took place along with a Revenue authorities’ demolition at Narakara near Humhama Railway Station.
Across the span of the city, many encroachments and illegal constructions were brought down at Batamaloo, Lal Mandi, Hamdaniya Colony, Nowshara, Rajbagh, and Gulab Bagh.
Commissioner SMC Riyaz Ahmad Wani told Kashmir Reader that they have many times asked the general public to desist from encroachments. The illegal infringement, however, did not abate, and finally, Wani said, “we have asked our staffers to take stringent action such offenders”.
He added that those employees who are not ready to share their responsibility have to face strict action. They have to do their duty properly on the ground, said Wani. “We will also take strict action against those employees who will not do their duty properly,” he added.
“We desist such elements from the practice if any such attempts would attract punitive action under the law. We also appealed to the general public not to raise any construction without getting prior permission from the authorities,” he further added.
Most of the illegal construction has been taking place in Srinagar suburbs with officials maintaining that in the Old City, very few violations were reported.
“In downtown area of Srinagar, there are less chances of illegal construction as the locals immediately complain to our department if they see any illegal construction in their locality,” he added.
