Srinagar: Scores of workers from Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) Workers Union on Tuesday held a massive protest demonstration here in press enclave against closure of depot yard Sopore by the Authorities.
The protesters demanded immediate handover of Depot yard Sopore for SRTC works including drivers and street vendors from depot yard Sopore should be evacuated.
JKSRTC Workers Union Chairman, Wajahat Hussain Durrani while talking to Kashmir Reader said that on May 24, “Baramulla Divisional authorities with the help of police have seized the Sopore depot yard, half a dozen seized vehicles are rusting in District police lines from more than two months,” he said.
“At that time the administration forcibly broke the depot yard gate and several workers of the union were also beaten up by the police. The fuel in tanks was also drained out,” Durrani added.
The Union Workers claimed that they are serving the SRTC department from last fourth years at the same area. They said that the SRTC services were shut from Sopore depot as office building, Petrol pump and Depot yard have been seized by the state government.
They allege Additional District Commissioner (ADC) Sopore, has given space to Street vendors at the depot land. The hand carts of street vendors of Sopore town have been already dumped there just to gain their vote bank under the influence of politicians, they alleged.
The SRTC depot yard Sopore operates its bus services to different districts including Kupwara, Srinagar, Bandipora, Baramulla town and ironically the service is shut from more than two months.
The workers Union appealed Governor NN Vohra to intervene in the issue.
State chairman of the Union threatened to go for state wide strike, if they are not allowed to resume their operations from depot yard at earliest.
