Shopian: Suspected militants on Tuesday evening lobbed a grenade on the 44 RR Chilipora army camp situated on the Shopian-Litter road. The grenade exploded but did not cause any damage or injury. However, the attack was followed by aerial firing by army soldiers, which created panic in the area.
The army camp is situated at a small village, Chilipora, some 15 kilometres from district headquarters Shopian.
A police officer said that at about 9 PM, militants attacked the army camp with an under barrel grenade launcher (UBGL) which exploded without causing any damage. He said that soldiers then retaliated by firing shots in the air.
Local sources said that militants also exchanged gunfire with the army before they fled from the area. Soon after the attack, the area was cordoned off and searches launched to nab the militants.
Senior Superintendent of Police Shopian, Sandeep Choudary, told Kashmir Reader that police have not received any official report from the army about the attack.
