SRINAGAR: A huge contingent of government forces cordoned off Srinagar’s Lal Chowk on Friday and carried out searches of commercial establishments and frisked commuters.
Around 3 pm, police and CRPF personnel carrying assault rifles sealed the route from Ganta Ghar to Court Road. Commuters as well as vehicular traffic were prevented from moving towards Amira Kadal bridge. Later, forces stopped vehicles and frisked passengers and pedestrians.
Vehicles parked along Residency Road were also searched, and many commuters complained their mobile phones were also checked.
Forces have stepped up vigil after militants carried out an attack on CRPF troopers near district police lines in Srinagar. One soldier was killed in the attack.
Later in the day, policemen erected barricades at Batamaloo and searched vehicles. Witnesses said that the surprise checking led to a traffic jam on the overcrowded road that connects Srinagar to other districts of the Valley.
Senior Superintendent of Police Srinagar Imtiyaz Ismail Parray said these are normal area domination exercises. These were regular security drills and nothing else,” he said.
