ANANTNAG: Two persons were injured after unknown gunmen opened fire on them while forcibly attempting to make their way into a Jammu and Kashmir Bank branch in Kulgam on Friday for looting cash.
The injured have been identified as civilian Ashiq Hussain of Mohanpora village and bank guard Mohammad Ashraf Pinjwa of Shangus, Anantnag.
Around 3:45 pm, gunmen appeared at the bank with an intention to loot cash, but an alert security guard repulsed the attack, prompting the gunmen to open fire on him.
“Militants barged inside a branch of J&K Bank at Mohanpora in district Kulgam with the intention to loot the bank. However people resisted the attempt of the militants and forced them to flee from the spot,” said a police spokesperson adding “Infuriated by this, militants fired resulting in injuries to two civilians and a bank guard.”
The duo was removed to Kulgam District Hospital for treament. While the civilian was later discharged from the hospital, Pinjwa has been shifted to Bone and Joints Hospital in Srinagar.
“The civilian had an injury to his hand and the security guard to his hip,” a doctor at the hospital said.
Soon after the incident, government forces cordoned off the area and carried out searches to nab the assailants.
Meanwhile, unidentified men on Friday snatched 12 bore rifle of Jammu and Kashmir Bank’s security guard in Shopian on Friday.
Senior superintendent of police, Sandeep Choudary told Kashmir Reader that police has filed case and investigations are on.
