Militants decamp with four rifles from politician’s residence in Shopian

SHOPIAN: Suspected militants decamped with four rifles from police guards at the residence of a former Congress leader in Shopain Thursday.
Police sources said militants barged into the into the guard post at the residence of Mohammad Shafi Banday at Bonbazar area of Shopian at around 8:30 pm.
Family sources told Kashmir Reader that the policemen resisted but the militants overpowered them and snatched rifles from them.
The assailants managed to run away with four SLRs, eight magazines and 340 rounds, sources said.
Soon after the incident, a joint team of forces launched a massive man hunt. Searches were underway in the nearby areas when this report was filed.
A police statement said, “Militants in the evening hours tonight barged inside a guard post at Bona Bazar in District Shopian and managed to flee with four rifles from there. Search operation is underway in the nearby areas. The circumstances leading to the incident is being ascertained.”
“Initial probe suggests complicity of proscribed Militant outfit HM in the incident. Police has initiated investigations into the matter.”
