Handwara: A militant was killed in an encounter with government forces in Handwara area of north Kashmir on Thursday afternoon.
Sources said that army’s 21 RR, SOG of police and other forces cordoned off the village Sadal in Magam area of Handwara on Thursday afternoon after receiving input of presence of a group of militants.
Sources said that as the forces reached near the suspected spot, militants fired upon forces resulting in an encounter.
The forces claimed that they killed one militant and search for others is continuimg.
The sources in the army said that it was a group of two militants in which one was killed and another escaped from the area before the gunfight.
SSP police district Handwara Gulam Jeelani confirmed that one militant was killed while a search operation was on. “We recovered a dead body of a militant from the encounter site and further search operation is on” the SSP said.
The police shifted the body of the militant to an unknown area and identity of the slain could not be confirmed as of now . However, sources said that the deceased was a non local militant. The search operation was continuing till last reports came in.
Sadal is a village some five kilometres from main town Handwara on Handwara-Magam road, covered with dense orchards and paddy fields.
